Missoula casting tips: agents urge clean self-tapes, updated reels and a week’s notice

During a Missoula Filmmakers Collective Skillshare, agents and actors offered practical guidance for filmmakers on casting, self-tape standards and working with local talent.

Kari, who runs the Rocky Mountain Agency, said the agency submits headshots, resumes and self-tapes and asks that filmmakers include logistics (filming location, lodging, mileage) in breakdowns. "Advanced notice for us is phenomenal," she said, recommending about a week for self-tapes rather than 48-hour turnarounds for many local performers who balance day jobs and family obligations.

Panelists recommended performers maintain two strong acting clips (one comedic, one dramatic) and keep resumes current so agents can submit competitive materials when a breakdown arrives. Kari emphasized the value of professional-looking self-tapes and training: "Don't give them a reason to say that we can't cast from here," she said, urging actors to learn professional self-taping techniques.

Actors described what attracts them to projects: strong writing, collaborative directors who provide emotional context, and roles that present a challenge. They recommended directors create a safe, collaborative set and be willing to discuss character motivation rather than issuing line reads.

The group also compared managers and agents: in larger markets managers often shape long-term careers while agents handle bookings; in Montana many agents perform both roles. Panelists cautioned that hiring both a manager and agent can add commission percentages that reduce take-home pay.

Organizers encouraged filmmakers to use local resources at MCAT (equipment checkout and editing suites), to join the Collective WhatsApp group, and to collaborate on short-film challenges the Collective plans to host.
