The St. Joseph School District Board of Education voted to approve a revised three-stage career ladder plan for 2026–27.
Stacia, who led the staff presentation, told the board the plan was developed with human resources and a career ladder working group and incorporated feedback from MSTA and NEA representatives. The district must meet state grant rules, including a 40% local contribution to the state career ladder grant and fixed hour requirements for stages (50, 75 and 100 hours).
Stacia said the working group reviewed applicants and adjusted stage placements by years of experience. She reported 12 educators at stage one, 54 at stage two and 336 at stage three based on the latest reviews. She said 13 of 15 working-group members responded to the district survey and that NEA participants indicated roughly 96% approval; MSTA provided supportive comments but did not supply a percent approval.
Board members asked for clarification on how unclaimed or partially completed stipends flow back into district funding. Staff explained teachers who sign up for a higher stage but do not complete the required hours can leave funds unused at the state level, creating a variable “excess” amount that may be reflected in future allocations.
After discussion, Cassandra moved to approve the revised 2026–27 career ladder plan and Latana seconded. A roll call vote recorded seven yes votes and the motion passed.
The board did not change the hour requirements imposed by the state and directed staff to proceed with implementing the revised plan and communicating next steps to participating educators.
