Founders Day’s future uncertain after fireworks oversight moves to Veterans Council

At a July meeting, Norton’s Park and Recreation Committee discussed the future of Founders Day after members said fireworks funding and logistics shifted to the Veterans Council.

Committee members reported that the Veterans Council opened a separate account to collect donations earmarked for fireworks and that some sponsorship and vendor activity ended up under that account. That change prompted concern among members who said pairing the carnival’s fireworks with Founders Day has reduced the event’s distinct identity and complicated sponsorship and vendor distributions.

Speakers discussed practical options: keeping Founders Day as a separate daytime festival without fireworks, staging the events on different days, or having different groups organize distinct components (for example, a Norton Day separate from the carnival). Members raised logistics and audience questions, noting attendance patterns and vendor costs at the carnival can detract from Founders Day’s vendors and smaller-scale programming.

The committee also agreed to request a financial wrap-up of Founders Day receipts and expenditures so members can assess what worked and what did not. No formal action was taken; committee members suggested following up with Veterans Council organizers and monitoring whether any outside group steps forward to host the event next year.

The discussion reflected broader concerns about branding and community engagement: several members said newer residents are unaware of the traditional Founders Day name and suggested rethinking the event’s structure and marketing to increase clarity and participation.
