Jackie Cash, the building principal at Horsesman Elementary School, told the board June 9 that her first year as principal brought measurable academic gains and a districtwide push to deepen instructional practice.
"Right now they are at 90% proficiency in the grade level in ELA," Cash said, citing kindergarten results as one example of progress tied to a focus on essential standards and collaborative professional learning teams.
Cash described a shift among teachers from grouping students by assessment level toward sustained instructional conversations about how to move students from one proficiency level to the next. She said the school used 15‑day instructional challenges, small‑group interventions, and formative checks to create consistency across classrooms.
On behavior, Horsesman adopted PBIS (positive behavioral interventions and supports) and began a restorative‑practices rollout midyear, including a staff book study to align approaches. Cash said the school is working to streamline tier‑one through tier‑three supports so expectations and supports are consistent across classrooms.
Cash also told the board that Horsesman will welcome Roosevelt students and staff in the fall, and that the schools have already begun joint faculty meetings and planning. She described August outreach events so new families can meet staff and see the building before school starts.
The principal closed by thanking district staff and expressing optimism for the coming school year.
