Commission selects colorful moose-and-fish court design for City Beach basketball mural

The Sandpoint Arts, Culture, and Historic Preservation Commission on June 9 recommended a colorful mural design featuring a moose and aquatic motifs for installation at the City Beach basketball court.
Staff explained the solicitation was open nationally and required proposed designs, contact information and examples of past mural work; multiple submissions were screened out for missing past-work examples or incomplete proposals. One submittal that included past murals and a complete design scored highest on artistic quality, responsiveness to the City Beach site, and practical feasibility for installation and maintenance.
Commissioners discussed playability and maintenance concerns — noting the court will be repainted and that site preparation (priming) could protect the mural — and suggested minor refinements to improve visibility of key elements, such as emphasizing the moose’s facial features. After discussion, the panel moved and seconded a recommendation of the highest-scoring proposal to move forward and the motion passed.
Staff will include the commission’s recommendation in the Council packet and coordinate the next steps for surface preparation and painting schedule with city operations staff.
