Sandpoint commission recommends vibrant four-quadrant banner design to City Council

The Sandpoint Arts, Culture, and Historic Preservation Commission unanimously voted June 9 to recommend Proposal I — a four-quadrant banner that depicts biking, hiking, sailing and shopping in bold silhouettes — to City Council for the city’s street-lamp banner program.
Staff said the banner call closed June 4 with nine total submittals; because some entrants provided multiple images, staff produced seven packets for the panel to score. The solicitation asked for artwork adapted to a 16-by-30-inch vertical lamp-post banner and used a 25-point rubric covering artistic quality, expression of the “Summer in Sandpoint” theme, suitability for vertical placement, public visibility, appropriateness for all ages and reproduction readiness.
Commissioners praised Proposal I’s clear silhouettes and reproduction readiness while identifying minor readability fixes — notably font weight — that staff could ask the artist to address before installation. Commissioner Will Valentine said the design’s colors and composition “would attract me” while suggesting a slightly thicker font for better street-level legibility.
Vice Chair Kate Mallister moved to recommend Proposal I to City Council; the motion was seconded and carried with no opposition. Staff will forward the commission’s recommendation and may work with the selected artist on minor adjustments permitted under the solicitation’s terms.
The recommended design will go to City Council for final approval and production scheduling. Staff also noted the city reserves the right to request minor modifications (font weight, cropping, bleed/crop marks) prior to printing.
