DuPage County honors Senior Deputy Coroner Steve Coleman; vote on adding coroner headcount postponed for two weeks

The DuPage County Board took time during its June 9 meeting to honor Senior Deputy Coroner Steve Coleman for more than three decades of service. Coroner Judy Lucas and colleagues recounted Coleman's career and described his investigative and mentoring role; colleagues said officials will consider budget changes to provide after-hours call coverage after his retirement.
At the Judicial and Public Safety committee update, Member Evans reported on FIR 88-26, a resolution to add one full-time headcount to the coroner's office. Committee members raised concerns about the timing of the request in the middle of the fiscal year and during ongoing union contract negotiations, and asked for additional information on workload trends, position salaries and years of service.
According to the committee summary, an amendment was proposed to fund the new position from the coroner fee fund rather than the general fund. While that amendment passed in committee, members moved to postpone the overall vote on the headcount and the related transfer of funds for two weeks so the requested information can be reviewed.
Member Evans said the postponement was intended to allow staff to provide the requested data on staffing needs and funding sources; no final board action to add the permanent position occurred during the June 9 meeting.
