Chair Deborah Conroy read a proclamation recognizing June 2026 as Alzheimer's and Brain Awareness Month and introduced organizers and Alzheimer's advocates who attended the meeting.
Karen Charvat, introduced as an organizer with local walk efforts, thanked the board for the recognition and described the local Walk to End Alzheimer's scheduled for Oct. 4 in Naperville, noting a fundraising goal of $375,000.
Dia Vier, executive director of the Illinois chapter of the Alzheimer's Association, told the board that growing evidence ties brain health to cardiovascular health and outlined preventive measures: "sleeping at least eight hours a night," "exercising 30 minutes a day," and controlling blood pressure and diabetes. She noted a sharp increase in NIH research funding for Alzheimer's over the past decade, and said advances have produced treatments that "address the actual biology of the disease."
The proclamation and remarks emphasized community caregiving needs and fundraising to support research and services. The board approved the proclamation during the meeting's opening business.
The county's proclamation also highlighted local caregiver numbers cited in the record and encouraged public awareness and volunteer support for upcoming fundraising events.
