Counselor presents Wayfinder SEL program; board hears data-driven approach for K–12

Stephanie Brown, an elementary school counselor, presented the Wayfinder supplemental curriculum to the board, describing it as a K–12, research-backed program built around six core skills: self-awareness, adaptability, empathy, collaboration, agency and purpose.
"My name is Stephanie Brown. I'm one of the elementary school counselors here in the district," she told the board, and explained Wayfinder enables teachers to deliver lessons created by educators, use formative and summative assessments to rate student skills on a one-to-five scale, and then target lessons to whole classes or individual students. She said the district has used Wayfinder across elementary, junior high and high school this year and is beginning to receive data from the assessments.
Brown said Wayfinder is not merely mood management: it aims to embed meaning and future-oriented skills and the district is preparing to extend Wayfinder content to meet the state's college- and career-readiness requirements.
Board members asked clarifying questions and acknowledged the connections between Wayfinder and district attendance and bullying-prevention work. The superintendent and staff said they will continue to incorporate the Wayfinder data into next year’s planning for MTSS supports.
