Council approves design amendments for Lake Street and South Washington Drive projects

Mount Shasta’s City Council on June 8 approved two professional services amendments to advance planned street and drainage work.
Public Works Director Ken explained that the Lake Street Complete Streets project originally had a $2.2 million construction budget but rising costs meant the work must be phased. The council approved Amendment 1 to Kimley Horn’s agreement, increasing design scope by about $47,000 to create two construction packages, add water and sewer design across the full corridor and add pedestrian and bicycle improvements such as bulb-outs at Mount Shasta Boulevard.
Separately, staff presented an amendment to Progression Engineering to add street-improvement design for South Washington Drive and to refine drainage assumptions; the $191,810 amendment brings that contract to $1,436,070, which staff said remains within available grant funding of $1,575,000. The amendment also reallocates some scope items and adds right-of-way work adjacent to West Water Street and the Union Pacific Railroad.
Ken said the Kimley Horn amendment will not change the overall schedule and that staff is seeking an extension of construction funding before the California Transportation Commission next week. Council approved both amendments.
Next steps: staff will finalize design packages, seek necessary grant extensions and proceed with environmental requirements and construction bidding as schedules and funding permit.
