Papillion La Vista schools earn Project ADAM heart-safe designation; superintendent outlines year-end priorities

Papillion La Vista Community Schools recognized its districtwide Project ADAM (heart-safe) designation at the June 8 board meeting, marking completion of AED placement, emergency response plans, emergency response teams and annual drills across all schools.
Dr. Rickley introduced the recognition and invited Matt Carper, Project ADAM coordinator for Children's Nebraska, to present. Carper, who said he lives in Papillion and has family in the district, thanked school nurses and district staff for completing the work that qualified all 24 district buildings for the designation. "Every one of your schools has a cardiac emergency response plan specific to your school," Carper said, noting training, AED placement and drills as core requirements.
Project ADAM medical director Dr. Sorenson (pediatric cardiologist, Children's Nebraska) summarized the program's origin — a nationwide effort started after the 1999 sudden cardiac arrest of a student athlete named Adam — and emphasized that AEDs paired with trained responders and drills can dramatically improve survival odds.
In the superintendent report that followed, Dr. Rickley reviewed five year-end goals for 2025'26: implementing strategic planning in-house, improving communication and engagement, enhancing curriculum and assessment (including toolbox and ELA changes), strengthening recruitment and retention strategies, and completing bond facility and safety projects. He highlighted summer school participation and said Lincoln View Elementary is on track to open two months before the new year.
No formal board action was required for the Project ADAM recognition; the board paused for a photo with the nurses and presenters before continuing other business.
