NextGen Civics Club presents records-digitization and event plans; court approves tourism appointments

Members of the NextGen Civics Club updated the Russell County Fiscal Court on community projects at the June 8 meeting and the court approved tourism-board appointments.
Students said they have been digitizing fiscal court records — including some of the county's earliest documents — to preserve history and make records searchable. The students also assisted the county tourism office in preparing roughly 1,500 welcome bags for the Bassmaster High School World Championship and are leading planning for a grand opening of the Greasy Creek recreation area later this summer.
Presenters identified themselves: Jay Helm said he is the treasurer of the NextGen Civics Club; Sydney Galisia said she represents the county attorney in the program; and Leah White said she is the club’s deputy judge. The court thanked the students for their service.
Appointments: The judge proposed reappointing David Dyson (identified in the meeting as manager at Rowing Marina) to the tourism board and appointing Susan Melton as the county’s tourism board representative; the court approved both appointments on a voice vote (motion moved by Mr. Garner, second by Magistrate Richardson).
Personnel note: The court discussed an administrative staffing change: Candace Miller will depart around June 18 and Shelby Landis is expected to take the position the week of June 20–25; the judge emphasized the new hire will need support to onboard during year-end work.
The court also described improvements to Greasy Creek recreation area — new signage and camera monitoring — intended to deter vandalism and encourage family visits.
