The Galesburg CUSD 205 Board of Education voted to name the district's new music wing in honor of longtime band director Sally Rhinard following alumni testimony and a committee recommendation.
Deb Masterson Signorelli, a 1978 Galesburg High School graduate and band alumna, addressed the board during public comment and urged the district to memorialize Rhinard's contribution to the band program and to multiple generations of students. Signorelli said she and other alumni had submitted letters of recommendation documenting Rhinard's impact.
Board members who participated in the naming-rights committee described Rhinard's strong presence in the school and the community and said current band leadership supported the request. One board member noted the nomination helps highlight and bolster female leadership in the district's music programs.
The board voted to approve the naming-rights request; administration will proceed to implement the change and update signage and district materials to reflect the new "Sally Rhinard Music Wing."
The decision followed a short public-comment period and a committee recommendation. The board did not state any additional funding commitments tied to the naming; implementation steps were described as administrative.
