Council approves after‑the‑fact permit for temporary Verizon pole serving New Town Neck Road area

Planning staff presented details of a temporary Verizon telecommunications pole placed after demolition of an Exxon canopy along New Town Neck Road and asked the council to approve completion of remaining work and final permitting. Mike Bailey said the temporary facility was placed to avoid interrupting emergency communications and service for approximately 200 active users in the area.
"This tower not only services approximately 200 active residents in that area, but it also provides emergency services communication," Mike Bailey said, explaining why staff issued an after‑the‑fact permit for electrical wiring and urged council approval so the town would not interrupt critical communications.
Bailey noted the current pole is essentially a single pole (about 26 feet tall in the new installation, 37 feet off the curb) and that prior temporary equipment on site would be removed. The packet provided to council included FAA, SHA and SMECO comments and staff approval. Council moved to approve the action "number 24‑26 horizon cell tower as presented" and the motion carried.
Staff said the pole location is on the McDonald's side of Route 5 and that the temporary facility was installed to address repeated service outages in the area while the permanent solution proceeds through permitting.
