The Leonardtown Town Council voted June 8 to accept a $650,000 grant from the Maryland Energy Administration and to amend the town budget to record the award. Treasurer Sharon read the grant terms and said the town will seek a federal direct‑pay incentive estimated at $293,588 and solar renewable energy credits of about $35,039 once the project is complete.
"The mayor and the council approved the Maryland Energy grant agreement for $650,000," Sharon said during the meeting, reading the award notification and the grant paperwork. Council members moved to adopt BA2026‑110 to accept the funds and place the money on the town's books so the project can be forward‑funded and the town can obtain reimbursements later.
Councilors voted on the motion during the meeting; one member registered opposition during the voice vote but the amendment carried. The grant will cover installation of solar panels on town‑owned sites and will be administered through a procurement and reimbursement process set out in the award paperwork. The town also plans to apply for the federal direct‑pay incentive and for renewable energy credits after project completion, Sharon said.
The council did not provide a construction timeline at the meeting beyond stating that Energy Select is the vendor identified in the application and that the grant money must be recorded on the town's fiscal books prior to expenditure. Staff will return with additional contract and timeline details as the project proceeds.
