Board appoints Deian as director of student services, citing special-education workload

The Culver Community Schools Corp Board of Trustees voted unanimously to appoint Deian as the district's director of student services, a position that will consolidate several special-education and student-support functions.
Board Chair opened the discussion by moving the hire from the consent agenda to a standalone action item so members could hear more detail. Karen, who presented the item, said Deian has been working in an internship capacity and recently earned a director of special-education license. Karen said the role will supervise three teachers transitioning into special education, absorb the district's case-conference coordinator duties (scheduling and serving as the local IEP representative) and take on management of free-and-reduced lunch application processing and direct-certification receipt to ensure data integrity.
Karen said centralizing those duties would free principals to spend more time in classrooms conducting observations and implementing a forthcoming teacher-evaluation plan. She told the board that the move reflects changes in the state's monitoring system for special education; the updated duties, she said, would also help ensure compliance with testing accommodations and related reporting.
A board member asked whether the role duplicated previous positions; Karen said it partly resembled earlier jobs but would not be a full re-creation because instructional coaching, curriculum development and data responsibilities remain with other staff. She described the case-conference coordinator component as requiring a dependable point person to schedule and reschedule IEP meetings and act as local liaison.
Board member Matt moved approval and Mark seconded. The board voted 6-0 to approve the appointment. Chair noted the change should reduce items "falling through the cracks" and allow more consistent oversight of students with specialized needs.
The board concluded the item by thanking Deian and inviting a photo; the appointment takes effect according to district personnel procedures.
