Friends donate $1,500 to summer reading; Seed Bank and foundation report program activity

At the June 2 meeting the board heard updates on community programs and fundraising. The Friends of the Library said it will take part in a community-wide garage sale (to be held at the American Legion) with proceeds split between the Friends and the Legion, and reported a $1,500 donation to support the library’s Summer Reading Program.
Library staff reported that more than 90 children have enrolled in the Summer Reading Program, “Unearth a Story,” which is scheduled to kick off Saturday, June 6 at Wilson Park. The board approved related consent items and noted the Friends’ gift will support program activities.
The Chadron Public Library Foundation reported a membership change: Emily Richling resigned and Dave Hutchins joined. The Foundation also announced scholarship winners Elu Paopao and Hina Hinman.
Separately, the Seed Bank report summarized activities since its March 2025 opening: the program received a $1,500 grant from the Chadron Open Arts District, ran classes and workshops, distributed seeds and gardening materials, and accepted donated seed stock to replenish its collection. The Seed Bank is partnering with Keep Chadron Beautiful during the library renovation while the library temporarily operates from 201 West 2nd.
Why it matters: Community funding and volunteer-run programs support the library’s outreach and summer programming; the Seed Bank and Foundation activity reflect ongoing local partnerships that expand library services.
The board will review program outcomes in future director reports and reconvene July 7, 2026.
