New Carrollton council approves continuing resolution and consent agenda to carry operations into FY2027

The City of New Carrollton City Council voted June 10 to approve a consent agenda that included Resolution 26-16, a continuing resolution authorizing interim expenditures for FY2027 at FY2026 levels until the full FY2027 budget is adopted.

The chair explained that the measure “gives us a budget for three months instead of a full year” while the administration completes outstanding work needed for the permanent FY2027 plan. Council members indicated the continuing resolution is intended to be short-term and that staff expects to submit final budget figures this summer. Staff said the city remains eligible for a tax differential as long as final numbers are submitted by the normal fall deadline.

Also on the consent agenda, the council approved Ordinance 26-21 (Budget Amendment No. 12) and the proposed projects/RFP list for FY2027, along with a series of meeting minutes. Council members voiced no objections to the items and approved the consent package by voice vote; the council recorded five “I”s and no nays during the roll call for the consent agenda.

Why it matters: The continuing resolution prevents a lapse in city services while staff completes studies and budget refinements that will inform the FY2027 spending plan. The council will revisit the full FY2027 budget and any remaining amendments in a later meeting.

Next steps: Staff said it will return with final budget numbers for the council to consider in the coming months; the continuing resolution remains in force only until the council adopts the FY2027 budget.
