Board approves student handbooks, adopts state-mandated device policy

The Tri-County School Corporation board voted to approve new student handbooks for Tri County Primary/Intermediate and the junior–senior high school that incorporate a state-required cell-phone and personal-device policy under Senate Enrolled Act 78.
Superintendent presented the handbook changes and explained the device policy: primary students should not bring cell phones or wireless devices to school; intermediate and secondary students must keep devices turned off and stored in an inaccessible, school-approved location (not in pockets, hoodies or backpacks). The policy includes exceptions for documented medical needs (with licensed-provider documentation), translation services, emergencies and other school-approved uses. Progressive-discipline steps are specified for first, second and third offenses.
Superintendent said the district will provide avenues for necessary parent–school communication through school offices and anticipates a transition period as families adapt. Board members confirmed administrators and legal counsel had reviewed the changes. The motion to approve both handbooks passed by voice vote.
The board did not adopt additional local exceptions beyond those spelled out in the handbook; administrators said building principals will manage accommodations under the policy.
