District rolls out "Bulldog Way" character program; SEL survey shows areas for improvement

Superintendent Ty told the Dolores County School District RE-2J board on Aug. 20 that the district has created the "Bulldog Way," a unified set of expectations for students and staff focused on integrity, dependability, respect, teamwork, positivity and grit.
Ty said the district completed ambassador training and all-staff training and plans to focus on a different character trait each month, starting with teamwork. He described the Bulldog Way as incorporating elements of programs used in prior years: the elementary Bulldogs STRONG program remains in place and the high school/middle school Expect Respect work has transitioned into the Bulldog Way framework.
In a quarterly review of social-emotional learning, Ty said last year's survey results identified ongoing concerns about school culture and student experience. The board discussed the need for a new survey system after moving away from STUDER, and Mrs. Cook-Carnahan was identified as the staff member responsible for building behavior expectations around the Bulldog Way traits.
Ty also presented the Safe Schools report; Board President Kimberly Alexander asked for the incident report to be broken down by individual incidents as it had been presented previously so the board can better track trends and responses. In the quarterly financial update Ty noted that while all Title funds have been released and allocations are being received, questions remain about state funding because of wider state budget reductions.
Board members prioritized implementation steps and asked administration to provide measurable updates at future meetings as the Trait-focused rollout and revised survey system are established.
