Committee debates role of superintendent, personnel committee and wage-range language in Policy 301

The committee examined a revised draft of Policy 301 on creating positions and job-posting requirements and agreed to revise language and run the draft by the solicitor before next consideration.
The draft had struck the superintendent out of one clause and elevated wording referencing the personnel committee. Members cautioned that the superintendent should remain involved: the superintendent typically proposes new positions, the personnel committee reviews recommendations, and the board makes final decisions. The committee asked that previously struck text be restored to preserve the superintendent's role in initiating staffing changes.
Board members also emphasized that job postings should include a reasonable wage or salary range; Elizabeth called the inclusion of a 'range' the "key component" to improve transparency. Other members cautioned that postings must also comply with collective bargaining agreements and that wording should reflect that constraint (for example, "in accordance with collective bargaining agreements" or "per contracts and plans"). The committee agreed administration will propose revised language that preserves superintendent involvement, clarifies personnel-committee function, and reconciles wage-range language with bargaining obligations. Policy 301 was tabled pending the solicitor's review and revised wording.
