Union City seeks $400,000 state grant for Willow Street bridge; approves tax-exonerations

Union City Borough Council voted unanimously June 25 to apply for a $400,000 Multimodal Transportation Fund grant to replace the Willow Street bridge and passed two tax-exoneration resolutions for properties acquired by the Erie County Land Bank.
Councilor Osborn moved to approve the grant application, and Councilor Kerns seconded; the motion carried unanimously. The grant, if awarded, would provide additional funding needed for the bridge replacement on Willow Street. The Council also approved tax-exoneration resolutions for 11 Maple Street and 48 Atlantic Street, properties the Erie County Land Bank purchased at tax sale. Councilor Joyce moved the tax-exoneration resolutions and Councilor Steadman seconded; the motions carried unanimously.
Mayor Robert Wolf, Borough Manager Cindy Wells and council members discussed the Land Bank purchases as part of ongoing efforts to address blight and return tax-foreclosed properties to productive use. No dissenting votes were recorded; Winkler was noted as absent.
The next steps are completing the formal grant application and any required local approvals or matching commitments if the state awards Multimodal Transportation Fund support. The Solicitor is scheduled to provide written findings on a separate property matter in mid-July.
