Washington County conservation director outlines timeline for Southtown pavilion, updates on park projects

Executive Director Zach Rozmus updated the Washington County Conservation Board on a package of parks projects, saying design work for a planned Southtown outdoor pavilion will continue with the City of Kalona but that funding will not be available until after July 1, 2026.
Rozmus told the board he has been consulting with Linn County Conservation about a recently constructed shelter at Morgan Creek and called that project “one of large inspirations” for the Southtown pavilion. He said he will keep working with Kalona on a timeline for the project.
Rozmus also reported that staff planted multiple wildlife food plots across county properties this year, primarily sorghum and sunflower, and commended Operations Supervisor Cody Smith for facilitating the work. He said the WCCB is pursuing at least one additional shelter purchase from Kalona Mini Building similar to the unit recently placed near the Marr Park shower house, with hoped-for installation in late summer or early fall 2026.
The director said the Marr Park pickleball and playground project is complete, that public feedback has been positive, and that he will present final financial figures for that project at an upcoming meeting.
The board did not take a formal vote on the pavilion or shelter purchases during the meeting; Rozmus framed these as planning and procurement updates with funding and installation timing to be clarified in future meetings.
