Xenia council accepts Charter Review Commission report recommending seven ballot amendments

The Xenia City Council accepted the Charter Review Commission’s report on June 11, a procedural step that files the commission’s recommendations with council but does not place amendments on the ballot.

Law Director Miss Fisher told council the commission met every two weeks beginning in January and submitted a report recommending seven charter amendments for consideration. She said the commission filed the report as required and that council members will have a special meeting at 5 p.m. on June 25 to hear the commission explain rationale and justification for recommendations.

Miss Fisher emphasized that acceptance of the report does not itself present amendments to voters; any amendment council wishes to place on the November 3 ballot must be adopted by ordinance. She also provided a timeline: council action to place amendments on the ballot must occur between July 6 and September 4.

Council voted to accept the commission report by roll call. Councilmembers praised citizen volunteers for their work on the commission and were advised that materials will be distributed to help council review the recommendations before the June 25 special meeting.

Next steps: Charter Review Commission representatives will present at the special meeting on June 25; council will review the commission’s rationale and may later adopt ordinances if it chooses to place any amendments on the November ballot.
