Doral honors outgoing Police Chief Edwin Lopez; he cites crime reductions and departs for Miami post

The Doral City Council honored outgoing Police Chief Edwin Lopez during the June 10 meeting with a video tribute, invocation, speeches from city leaders and multiple recognitions including plaques and a key to the city.

Chief Lopez, who has accepted a post in Miami, spoke to the chamber about his 26 years of public service and three and a half years in Doral, praising officers and staff who he said worked through mass events and difficult incidents. In his remarks Lopez thanked the department and residents and said the department had helped lower the city’s crime rate "over 50%" during his tenure. He also told his successors: "Don't crash the damn car, though." The remarks were followed by words of appreciation from the mayor, city manager, and council members and a series of presentations from community groups.

Council also recognized the contributions of officers trained in the department's first police academy class and community partners.
