Fayette County sets schedule and July 8 evidentiary hearing in Vest election contest

Fayette County commissioners on June 10 set a procedural schedule for the election contest filed by Mr. Vest and consolidated findings from a prior hearing into a single order covering both matters.

By motion and second, the commission required Mr. Vest to file, on or before June 17, 2026, a written statement specifying grounds for the contest, factual allegations, the legal basis for relief sought, the relief requested, and the names of any witnesses known at the time. Any contestee or interested party must file a written response by June 24, 2026.

The parties must exchange witness lists and exhibits no later than July 1, 2026. An evidentiary hearing in which witnesses will testify under oath was set for July 8, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. at the Fayette County Courthouse and Commission Chambers. The commission noted that it may receive evidence on that date but might defer decisionmaking; any final decision may be appealed to circuit court.

Commission staff said the order includes findings of fact from the prior hearing to limit confusion and ensure parties have copies of all filings. The commission also noted Commissioner Brenamman will not participate in the evidentiary hearing; the hearing will involve Commissioner Miller and the presiding commissioner.

The schedule was approved and the commission instructed counsel and staff to circulate the consolidated order and notices to the parties.
