Board weighs purchase of 35 acres behind Centauri campus, defers decision

Superintendent Darren Edgar told the North Conejos School District Re-1J board that Leroy Martinez indicated he may be willing to sell 35 acres behind the Centauri High School/Centauri Middle School campus. Edgar said the board asked for a precise delineation of which 35 acres are under consideration and asked the administration to investigate road access and any county requirements and costs.
The board requested that Edgar check with the Martinez family and with Conejos County about access and related costs, and to obtain photos of the Martinez parcel and adjacent county property to help clarify potential site constraints. Edgar said the board would revisit the matter at a work session scheduled for April 7, 2026.
Board members also discussed a separate 5-acre parcel owned by Tom Davis and concluded there was "no real benefit" to purchasing that parcel at this time; they did not take action on the Martinez property.
No formal motion or purchase approval was made; the discussion produced direction for staff to gather more information and bring the subject back at the April work session.
