The Farmingdale Board of Trustees on Nov. 21 approved a Commercial STEP program that allows two sidewalk flags per business (60 linear feet of frontage) and authorized a $3,520 grant to St. Kilian’s Church to repair the Cherry Street sidewalk from Conklin Street to Wesche Drive (Resolution #2023-11-12). Trustee Cheryl Parisi moved the measure and Trustee Craig Rosasco seconded; the vote was unanimous.
The action accompanies other event and outdoor-dining items discussed at the work session. Joe Fortuna described the village’s tent-use parameters: tents may be used Nov. 1 through April 30, are limited to 20 seats (five tables of four), and may use infrared heat subject to fire marshal approval.
The board also approved a permit for St. Kilian’s to hold a parade/procession on Saturday, Dec. 10, beginning at approximately 7:45 p.m., following Mass. The route will start at Conklin Street, proceed east to Secatogue Avenue, and continue through Van Cott Avenue, Grant Avenue, Cherry Street and Wesche Drive to the St. Kilian School parking lot (Resolution #2023-11-14).
Why it matters: the STEP program changes storefront display allowances and provides a small capital repair grant to a local church, while the tent and parade permissions clarify rules for winter outdoor activities and community events. The resolutions direct staff to implement the program parameters and to ensure permits meet public-safety requirements, including fire marshal sign-off on heating.
