Superior to switch HRA administration to Avaben on July 1; retirees gain investment option

The School District of Superior announced June 8 that it will transition administration of its employee Health Reimbursement Arrangement (HRA) from MidAmerica to Avaben, effective July 1, 2026.

District staff said the change will provide enhanced features for participants, including the ability for retirees to invest HRA funds and a modern online portal with daily balance updates. A welcome packet from Avaben will be mailed to HRA account holders with instructions on setup and any initial steps; staff said there will be a short blackout/transition window during the switchover. The district also noted that 403(b) accounts held through MidAmerica will remain with MidAmerica unless individual account holders elect to move them through their advisors or an administrative option.

Molly, a district staff member who spoke during the meeting, said the change followed service concerns with the prior administrator and that packets with setup instructions will be issued in July. She added that for early July there may be a short period when participants must submit claims and be reimbursed later while accounts are transferred.

Why it matters: The administrative change affects all HRA participants (teachers, support staff and administrators) and could change how retirees manage balances and claims.
