Marcellus students earn Seal of Biliteracy; district honors retirees and showcases arts and music

The Marcellus Central School District on June 8 publicly recognized this year’s retirees and celebrated students who earned the Seal of Biliteracy in Spanish and French.
District officials read the retiree list and announced a commemorative planter that will be placed in front of a school building to honor the 2025–26 retirees. School staff congratulated tenure candidates named on the agenda.
Heather Arcisa, who the record identifies as overseeing the Seal of Biliteracy process, told the board that 10 candidates (five in each language) presented to a judging panel April 30 and that all candidates earned the state-recognized seal. Arcisa said the district had not yet received state-issued medallions and that qualifying students would receive graduation cords and recognition from language honor societies in the interim.
Teachers brought students forward to demonstrate short presentations and answer judges’ questions in the target languages; staff said Marcellus students tend to perform without notes and respond to spontaneous questions in the language during judging. Spanish-side teacher Maria (self-identified) and a teacher who introduced students described close teacher-student relationships and preparation that helped students succeed.
As an informational item, the counseling department presented an updated K–12 comprehensive counseling plan required by New York State. Heather Artist (self-identified as a high-school counselor) said the plan has been updated to align with revisions by the American School Counselor Association (ASCA), which now includes six mindset standards and 29 behavioral standards. Administration said the updated plan will be presented to the board for formal approval at the next meeting.
The board also offered public thanks to the district’s art and music departments for recent exhibits and performances and announced a community work party to support the newly named Marcellus Collaborative Garden.
