Mesquite ISD awards Core Construction contracts and approves pre-K schematic design

District staff recommended awarding Core Construction as the best-evaluated offeror for at-risk general-contractor contracts covering the Poteet High School addition and renovation (solicitation 2026-2; administration estimate cited about $47.9 million) and the Mesquite High School addition and renovation (estimate cited about $52.0 million). Administration said choosing Core enabled a combined package that reduced contractor fees from 1.95% to 1.75% across both projects. Trustees moved, seconded and approved the awards by voice vote.
Architects with DLR Group presented schematic design options for the Early Childhood Learning Academy, showing four identical learning pods (about 28 classrooms total), a central outdoor courtyard, split dining areas and a large multipurpose room designed to serve as a storm shelter. The design team said the layout emphasizes flexibility, inclusive access and immersive learning classrooms in each pod.
"We have about 28 classrooms, which are divided into four learning pods," DLR's presenter said while describing circulation, parent drop-off and the bus loop. Trustees asked a few clarifying questions about lighting and design details, then moved and approved the schematic design in a single motion.
The board recorded vocal approval for both the construction awards and the pre-K schematic design; staff said the decisions advance projects funded through the district's 2025 bond program.
