Andover honors state-champion speech and drama team ahead of nationals

The Andover City Council on June 9 issued a proclamation honoring the Andover High School competitive speech and acting team after the squad won the Kansas 5A state speech and drama championship for a second consecutive year.
Tim Brunson read the proclamation and recognized the team’s work under coach James Harris. The proclamation cited individual achievements, including Emily Meyer’s state championship in dramatic interpretation and Shawn Mansour’s state championships in informative speaking and international extemporaneous speaking.
Brunson invited team members and parents to the podium; students described travel plans and spoke briefly about the preparation required for different events such as extemporaneous speaking (seven-minute response after 30 minutes of preparation) and duo acting (20-minute pieces). The council congratulated the team and wished them success at the national speech and debate tournament in Richmond, Virginia in June.
The proclamation is ceremonial recognition and does not require council action beyond adoption on the meeting agenda.
