Board approves six‑year secondary math textbook adoption; cost about $554,806

The Prince George County School Board voted June 8 to approve a six‑year adoption of Savvas (Savvas Learning) secondary mathematics instructional materials for grades 6 through Algebra II.

Mr. Chandler, who led the selection committee, described a review process that used the Virginia Department of Education’s approved pool, teacher rubrics and vendor presentations. He said teachers narrowed six vendor samples to two finalists, then favored Savvas: "Out of those 21 teacher responses, 19 of them indicated that Savvas was their first choice," Mr. Chandler said.

The recommended package is blended print and digital: middle‑school students receive two consumable volumes each year, a workbook and full digital access that integrates with Google Classroom; high‑school courses use traditional hardback texts and teacher editions. Mr. Chandler told the board the total cost for the six‑year adoption is $554,806.25 and that the division will make the purchase July 1 using state textbook funds that can be carried forward.

Doctor Martin explained funding options and said textbook funds are per‑pupil state allocations that roll over year to year; the division also has prior‑year carryover it can apply to the adoption if needed.

Board members moved the adoption to action and approved it by roll call. Board members asked staff to circulate sample copies for review before implementation; Mr. Chandler said samples are available to board members.

The purchase commits instructional materials for a six‑year cycle and represents a planned expenditure against textbook funds; implementation will follow the division’s adoption schedule and teacher training timelines.
