Council to open public hearing process on limiting fireworks to July 3'4

The City Council discussed proposed changes to the city's fireworks sale-and-use ordinance, including a plan to limit use inside city limits to July 3 and July 4 only (sales would remain governed by state rules). The Chair said many residents had asked for limits on use to reduce post-July 4 disturbances and that the proposal would apply only within city limits.

Council members and staff emphasized enforcement constraints: one member said the sheriff's office received many complaints tied to bar-closing times and recommended keeping a 2 a.m. end on July 4 because the county lacks the same enforcement capacity as towns with local police. "The sheriff's department was getting so many complaints...they just weren't able to respond," a council member said, explaining why hours were previously extended.

Members also said they would seek input from the Booster Club and the fire department because narrowing allowed days could concentrate sales and affect local fundraising. "I would like to hear from them about how they feel it would affect their fundraising," a council member said; the Chair committed to contacting Booster Club leadership.

Staff proposed a process timeline: a resolution of intent at the Aug. 6 meeting, followed by a public hearing and second reading on Aug. 20; if public comment is limited, the council could pass the ordinance on Aug. 20. Councilors agreed to gather stakeholder feedback and revisit the matter on Aug. 6.
