Granite County requires written authorization for third-party garbage hauling; approves equipment purchase

Following a closed session on personnel, the Granite County Commission announced a new written-authorization policy on June 2 to govern third-party garbage hauling at county transfer stations: individuals hauling waste on someone else’s behalf must provide written authorization unless they possess the property’s dump card, which the commission said remains sufficient proof of authorization.
Solid Waste staff reported an incident in which a dumpster tailgate fell into a container and noted inconsistent acceptance of dump cards at the Philipsburg site. Drummond transfer-site supervisor John Kendall called in to request approval to purchase solid tires for a backhoe to reduce flat-tire downtime; commissioners approved the purchase and supporting repairs and coordination with the contractor for a planned bathroom addition. Mayor Gail Leeper raised concerns about waste-disposal charges at the Wagon Wheel property (reported at six cents per pound), and commissioners directed staff to place fee-policy clarification on a future agenda.
County Treasurer Ashley Todd said a permit application is pending for the Philipsburg burn pile; commissioners discussed creating an alternative disposal area near the junk-vehicle site to reduce hauling costs. Public comments included appreciation for Solid Waste attendants’ assistance during community cleanup efforts.
