Commission approves annexation to extend fire protection to five parcels north of Kanab

The Kane County Commission on June 9 adopted Resolution R2026-12 to annex certain territory into the Vermillion Cliffs Special Service District, a move commissioners said will extend and formalize fire protection coverage for five parcels north of Kanab.

Chair explained the parcels are tied to continuity issues in annexation rules—some parcels could not be annexed by Kanab City because state annexation rules require contiguity—leaving them without guaranteed fire coverage. Taylor (government-affairs staff) said the five parcels are owned by three landowners and all petitioned for annexation; because the petitioners are in agreement, that process can waive the protest/public-hearing period that would otherwise apply.

Taylor also explained an existing agreement with Kanab City and Vermillion Cliffs Special Service District provides interim coverage for some parcels but that the county needed to act to avoid gaps and to signal to Kanab City its intent; staff noted a July 1 deadline tied to a one-year extension option in the existing arrangement. Commissioner Celeste asked staff to correct one recital in the resolution (the number of landowners cited) and staff committed to make that correction before final paperwork is filed.

The commission voted to adopt the resolution; the item will be transmitted to Kanab City for information, and county staff will confirm all statutory noticing and recording steps are completed.
