The Kane County Commission on June 9 approved an updated fiscal-year contract for bailiffs and court security with the State of Utah's 6th District Court.
Sheriff Shoa explained the county and the court share responsibility for courtroom and perimeter security, noting the county operates magnetometer screening and provides bailiffs. "If you're gonna make some place a gun-free zone, you better make sure it's a gun-free zone," he said, arguing for adequate staffing and noting the court pays a portion of costs. The sheriff told commissioners the contract cost has risen substantially compared with prior years and that the current arrangement represents a significant increase from historic amounts.
Commissioners confirmed the contract is included in the county budget, and legal staff did not identify substantive contractual changes beyond the dollar amount. Chair moved to approve the fiscal 27 bailiff and security contract with the State of Utah, 6th District Court; the motion passed on a voice vote.
The sheriff said the arrangement is statutorily supported and that the court's increased contribution represents improved funding toward expected staffing levels. County staff will file the executed contract with the clerk's office.
