Griffin agrees to $20,000 share for summer shuttle pilot with Spalding County

The Griffin Board of Commissioners voted June 9 to join Spalding County and the Rivers Regional Commission in a six-week pilot of a free fixed-route shuttle to connect residents to county recreation sites.
Staff said the total cost of the pilot is $40,000 and the county requested a $20,000 contribution from Griffin. The shuttle will run Tuesday through Saturday from roughly 9 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. beginning June 17 and running through Aug. 14, with stops at Fairmont Park, Oaks (Oak City Park), the senior center, Ambuk Park and the aquatic center; riders must be at least 15 years old to board at most stops and 18 at the aquatic center stop. ADA-eligible riders may request pickup within 24 hours.
City staff said the program was not budgeted and would be funded from commissioners’ contingency if no transportation funds were available, and that Three Rivers (the operator) will track ridership and provide usage data for the board to evaluate continuation of the service.
Commissioner Fuller moved to approve the partnership; Commissioner Hullberg seconded. When the board called the vote, six members raised hands in favor.
The pilot’s limited duration and reporting requirements are intended to let the county and city assess demand before committing longer-term funding.
