Architects outline plan, schedule for Proviso sports complex; internships and sustainability on the table

Emilio Padilla, principal and project manager at JGMA, told the Proviso Township High School District 209 board on June 9 that his firm has completed initial engagement with district leaders, staff and students and is preparing design packages to support permitting and bidding.
"We're deeply honored to be your architect on the Proviso sports complex project," Padilla said, describing the team and its commitment to permit-ready documents, cost-estimating and local subcontractor engagement. He said the firm has also hired a cost estimator and engineers to refine budget assumptions.
Presenters showed a program list that includes a soccer and football stadium with a running track, a five-field event area, baseball fields, tennis courts, basketball and volleyball courts, a cross-country trail, concessions, restrooms and a plaza for community use. Padilla said the site comprises roughly 43 acres and that the team will prioritize fixing and improving fields as the first program element.
JGMA outlined a schedule that calls for the team to present a first package to the district and to select a general contractor by September to allow pricing and design to proceed in parallel; drawings and permitting work will continue through the end of the year. The architects said a landscape architect and a plant list will be developed in later design phases, and that sustainability measures (including analysis of electrical loads and opportunities for solar or geothermal systems) will be reviewed during design.
Board members asked specifically about student internship opportunities; Maria and Zia of JGMA said one Proviso senior has been identified for a summer internship but the firm is open to adding more interns from the district and to mentoring students on design work. "We normally welcome interns to our office so they can shadow and see what an office environment is like," the team said.
Padilla said the next steps include submitting the first design package for cost validation, sharing the running list of community and staff feedback the firm has been compiling, and returning to the board for approval to move to the next design phase.
The presentation concluded with visual concepts and a request for the board's buy-in to allow the team to proceed to permit and bid documents; no formal board action on the project was recorded that night.
