Advocates ask McLean County board to centralize victims' rights resources, increase transparency

Erica Larkin, speaking for the nonprofit Care for Victims, told the McLean County Board during public comment that the group emailed county leadership on April 6 seeking guidance on community engagement and did not receive a response. "We recommend improving public access to this information through a dedicated victims' rights and resource section on the county website," Larkin said, urging the board to review the assessment report and identify county departments and partner agencies to participate in further discussions.

Larkin said residents struggle to find clear and timely information about victims' rights, protections and support services, and recommended creating a centralized, user-friendly directory similar to the county reentry directory. She also asked for increased outreach, transparent complaint processes and regular opportunities for community feedback so residents know their rights and available resources "before they need them." "Our purpose is not to criticize or to call out any individual or any agency," Larkin said. "We believe these recommendations can strengthen public trust, improve outcomes for victims and their families, and help ensure county services are responsive to community needs."
