Board members discussed whether to prioritize capital needs or pay increases. One board member, who spoke in favor of investing in staff, called the decision “an investment in our people,” noting that Amherst’s pay scales lag peers. “For me it comes down to two things ... we’re making an investment in our people,” a board member said.
David Childress, the board member participating remotely, announced he would abstain because his spouse would be directly affected by the bonus. The chair confirmed the motion passed by voice vote and stated Childress’s abstention on the record.
The board did not record a roll-call tally in the public transcript; finance staff said the bonus was scheduled for the June payroll. Board materials and staff comments indicated the district will spread the funds across full- and part-time employees per the plan presented.
