The Town of Laurel Communications Committee reviewed a draft tri-fold brochure and plans for the town website at its May 7 meeting, confirming key content and next steps for design and editing. George Lodato, Committee Chairman, called the meeting to order and introduced new member Zach Whaley, who was asked to be connected with past minutes to get up to speed.
The committee confirmed that the Mayor’s welcome message has been received and has been inserted into the brochure draft, and that the "Welcome to the Neighborhood" section will remain as written. Members said the remaining text needs a full edit pass and that organizational listings are currently in draft form. The group agreed to remove Jim LaRue from the elected-officials listing and to mark the vacant ward seat with the ward number and the label "Open" to avoid empty space.
Committee members emphasized a simple, positive website approach focused on high-quality photographs and 'good news' content to avoid a cluttered front page. The group supported spotlighting Laurel students — both athletes and non-athletes — and highlighting programs such as FFA, theater productions, and inclusive/unified athletics. The committee discussed inviting students to speak at town meetings periodically to reinforce community pride.
On brochure logistics, the committee agreed to include a QR code that links directly to the website and to print the full web address beneath it for residents who do not use QR scanners. Zach Whaley suggested potential school contacts who could assist with photography and design support.
The meeting closed with specific follow-up assignments: Cheryl will continue work on the tri-fold; Zach will connect Cheryl with a school contact for photos; Jill will check police-website link structure; George will contact Ron (GBI) about the website and email Zach past minutes; and Sharon will update the website tab organization.
The committee adjourned at 8:50 p.m.
