Council honors student leaders and retiring city employees; library promotes summer programs

The June 9 council meeting included several community recognitions and presentations.
Student leaders Michaela Thomas, Amaya Anderson, Oscar Santoro Garcia and Elena Ortega accepted Juneteenth and Pride Month proclamations and briefly described their Black Student Union work on inclusivity and cultural awareness at their schools. The mayor asked students to say a few words and councilmembers took photographs to commemorate the proclamations.
Commander Daniel Hogan was recognized by the council for his leadership at the Lakewood Sheriff Station; he thanked the mayor, council and residents for their support. The council also honored Nancy Hamilton of the Public Safety Department for 23 years of service and Alma Rivera Juarez of Public Works for nearly 31 years. Both retirees accepted plaques and gave brief farewell remarks.
Andrea Crowe of the Paramount Library offered a public comment announcing LA County Library’s summer discovery program (June 1–August 9) with in‑person programs and a children’s mascot‑making event and storytime dates, and City Clerk Heidi Luce read a written comment from Martha Torres of the Fair Housing Foundation describing available housing resources.
