Tumwater staff: council gives green light to research battery energy storage systems

City staff told the Tumwater Planning Commission on June 9 that the City Council had given staff a green light to research battery energy storage systems and to return with proposed code updates.
Mr. McKenna, the newly introduced associate planner, said staff will prepare materials that present two options: a pathway that relies on state or utility regulation and a more highly regulated local pathway, and will highlight known risks. Staff told commissioners the research and drafting work may be completed later this year or may run into 2027 depending on the scope of review.
Commissioners thanked staff for clarifying the two options and asked that the proposals be presented clearly so the commission can recommend an approach to the council after the briefing and any required public outreach.
