District previews 'Magnetic Literacy' elementary ELA pilot; board approves two-week public review

Rachelle Ball, the district’s director of curriculum and instruction, presented an update on the Magnetic Literacy elementary English language arts pilot at the May 6 Buckeye Union School District Board meeting.
Ball said the integrated program combines comprehension, vocabulary, grammar, writing, listening and speaking in one instructional sequence. She reported pilot-teacher feedback that highlighted the program’s rigor, student engagement and instructional supports and told trustees that both pilot teachers and the Instructional Materials Adoption Committee (IMAC) unanimously recommended moving forward with Magnetic Literacy and opening the curriculum for a two-week public review prior to a formal adoption recommendation.
Board members asked questions about pacing supports, the publisher’s responsiveness to teacher feedback and the public review process. No formal adoption vote occurred; staff will post the materials for a two-week public review before the Board considers a formal adoption recommendation at a future meeting.
