Residents urge Grayson County to consider 180‑day moratorium on data centers

"I respectfully request the board consider adopting an immediate hundred and 80 day moratorium on data centers and related facilities," Wagner told the board during public comment, saying such a pause would provide time to "carefully review existing zoning ordinance" and "determine whether additional protections are needed before any proposal is ever submitted." He cited concerns about new substations, transmission lines, significant land‑use change and large water use that could be difficult to reverse once projects are built.
Doug Cox, who identified himself as a ninth‑generation farmer, raised similar concerns about energy demand, water consumption and long‑term local economic benefit. "My biggest concern is these companies are predatory," he said, warning of expansion, strain on volunteer fire and EMS, and the need to require vendors to fund filtration, training and emergency response capacity. Becky Coscott, another resident, urged the board to favor smaller local businesses and questioned secrecy around recruiting large projects.
County staff responded in the county administrator’s report that the board had posted on Facebook that, as of 05/28/2026, no supervisor or county staff member had been approached about a data center in Grayson County. The staff member invited residents to meet at the county office to discuss concerns and said the county ‘doesn’t have anything going on’ regarding data centers at present.
