2026 district surveys: student safety rated strong; staff and parent participation up

Jen Mirbach, director of research and accountability, presented results from the 2026 student engagement survey: 13,500 students responded (a 3% increase). Mirbach summarized domains: safety scored above 75% across levels, class experience and academic support were strengths (student learning ~77%, teacher support >90%), and relevance and acceptance/belonging among older students were opportunities for improvement.
Staff results showed 2,626 responses — about 85% participation — with high marks for feeling valued at sites (~92–93%) and improvements in supervisor communication and culture. Retention drivers named in the presentation were site culture, salary, increased workload and time constraints.
Parent participation rose substantially to about 4,700 responses after the survey was shortened and redesigned for five-minute completion on a five-point scale. Communications and crisis communication responses improved; the district highlighted text messages and ParentSquare as preferred methods for parent outreach and set a goal of 6,000 parent responses next year.
Presenters said qualitative comments were distributed to schools and teams and that district staff will continue follow-up work to translate survey feedback into actionable steps. There was no board action requested during the workshop; staff will continue data distribution and plan to report back on resulting improvements.
