Downtown parks group asks council for continued budget support as kiosk, music series return

Suzanne Bernabby, executive director of the Downtown Providence Park Network, told members of the Special Committee on Ways and Means that DPPN's mission is to "activate, connect, and enhance public spaces in downtown and along the waterways of Providence."
Bernabby outlined the organization's first three years: launching a winter luminaria festival, reviving the Burnside concert series and producing wayfinding signage and a web app that documents about 200 downtown locations. She said DPPN is partnering with city parks, Providence Art, Culture, and Tourism and the Providence Tourism Council to reopen a kiosk at Builtmore Park and will host a Wednesday-night music series and a Tuesday-night chess club this summer and fall. "All of our programming is free and open to the public," Bernabby said, and she asked the committee to support the mayor's budget which includes grant funding that DPPN relies on.
Councilors thanked Bernabby for the work and noted the city's capital investments and the mayor's inclusion of the DPPN grant in the proposed budget. The committee did not take a formal vote at the hearing; members said they expect to review amendments released later in the week.
