Division of Aging and Independence reports staffing changes, program volumes and budget uncertainty ahead of county vote

Carolyn B. True, director of the Division of Aging and Independence, and division staff updated the Senior Services Advisory Board on May 11 about staffing, program volumes, events and potential budget changes.
Joy Rowe, Department Head for Resource and Service Navigation, said a Veterans Affairs Service Navigator position has been filled and starts May 18; a MAP Service Navigator position will be posted because one staff member is moving to a service coordination role. Rowe reported that the Maryland Access Point (MAP) averages about 30 client contacts per day and that the SHIP/Medicare program receives roughly 20 referrals per day. True added that about 300 residents in the county turn 65 each month, underpinning sustained demand for services.
Kitty Devilbiss, Department Head for Home and Community Connections, highlighted outreach materials and several upcoming events including the Champion Your Health Fair on May 15, a talent night at the virtual/in‑person senior center on May 20, a document‑shred event on June 12 and a "Scams and Fraud" presentation on June 16 in Middletown.
True told the board that two division positions were being considered for cuts in the county budget but remained in the County Executive's proposed budget at that time; she said possible budget amendments were expected and that the County Council would vote on the budget the following week. True also said Governor Wes Moore would visit Frederick that week on matters related to affordable housing and aging services and that the division would be involved.
Board members discussed nominations, upcoming trainings and coordination with external partners. The division announced plans to restart board orientation and to host a Boards & Commissions dinner on Aug. 5. The meeting adjourned at 2:48 PM.
