Ossining departments report steady permitting, infrastructure repairs and active summer programming

Town officials on June 2 offered routine departmental updates at the Ossining work session, reporting permitting activity, infrastructure repairs and active summer programming.
John Turnquist, the town building inspector, said the building department issued 164 permits in the first half of 2026 and collected $47,515 in permitting fees. "For the first half of this year, we've had 164 permits. $47,515 was the intake on the uh permitting fees," Turnquist said. He told the board that two recent zoning variances were approved — one for an addition on Ganung and a driveway impervious-area adjustment — and that a small number of code-enforcement matters, including alleged illegal occupancy and overgrowth, are moving through the courts.
Pete Connelly, superintendent of highways and cemetery, outlined routine stormwater and road work. He said the town meets or exceeds the annual requirement to clean at least 20 percent of catch basins (about 125 of roughly 600), assisted with cleaning high-use sanitary pump stations and repaired a broken 10-inch storm drain between Decker and Donna Lane. "We have roughly 600 catch basins and we we meet or exceed that every year," Connelly said. He added that cemetery crews completed spring cleanups and reported 20 interments this year at Dale Cemetery and none at Sparta.
Recreation Superintendent Bill Garrison said the community center roof will be the first phase of a renovation, with the town hoping to go out to bid by the end of the month and to begin interior work in late winter or early spring 2027. Garrison also said summer camp opens in 27 days with more than 500 children registered (registration is slightly down from last year). He reported work at Gearlock Park — including a new backstop and fencing — and said Ryder Park’s new pickleball courts have 56 members and the department is adjusting reservation procedures.
Taken together, officials characterized the town’s operations as busy but stable, noting ongoing maintenance, routine inspections, and planned capital projects. Several items the officials described (roof bid timing, court reservations, and ongoing court cases) will return to staff for follow-up.
